Auditing Redundancy in Election Records
نویسنده
چکیده
Elections are conceptually trivial: After everyone has voted, the votes in each ballot position are counted, and the winner of each race is declared. Barring the use of some form of rankedpreference ballot, the algorithms required are hardly more than mere summations. What makes elections difficult is the problem of performing this summation over a canvassing hierarchy spanning many polling places and local election offices, where every single participant has a vested interest in the outcome. Complete trust cannot be extended to any single authority to run an honest election because every candidate for such trust may have a vested interest and may end up abusing that trust. Therefore, voting systems must be secured not only against improper actions by voters and election officials, but also against improper actions by programmers, technicians, and system administrators.

Software Support for Software-Independent Auditing
Electronic voting machines have the potential to make the election process more efficient, but concerns over their reliability and security could undermine confidence in election results. The most effective way of verifying election results is by auditing physical copies of the ballots that have been verified by the voter. Since manually viewing every ballot is unrealistic, a variety of algorit...
متن کاملEfficiently Auditing Multi-Level Elections
In a multi-level election, voters are divided into groups, an election is held within each group, and some deterministic procedure is used to combine the group results to determine the overall election result. Examples of multi-level elections include U.S. presidential elections and some parliamentary elections (such as those with regional groupings of voters). The results of such an election c...
متن کاملMachine-Assisted Election Auditing
Election audit procedures usually rely on precinctbased recounts, in which workers manually review all paper ballots from selected polling places, but these recounts can be expensive due to the labor required. This paper proposes an alternative audit strategy that allows machines to perform most of the work. Precincts are recounted using recounting machines, and their output is manually audited...
متن کاملPost-Election Auditing: Effects of Procedure and Ballot Type on Manual Counting Accuracy, Efficiency, and Auditor Satisfaction and Confidence
A task common to nearly all types of election auditing is that of human auditors physically counting ballots by hand. This task, fundamental to the goal of accuracy in an audit, can be a source of error. While somewhat basic in its nature, the process of counting can be strongly influenced by many procedural and legal factors. In the current study, we examine how specific group counting procedu...
متن کاملBatchVote: Voting Rules Designed for Auditability
We propose a family of novel social choice functions. Our goal is to explore social choice functions for which ease of auditing is a primary design goal, instead of being ignored or left as a puzzle to solve later. Our proposal, “BatchVote,” creates a social choice function f from an arbitrary “inner” social choice function g, such as instant-runoff voting (IRV), and an integer B, the number of...
